On independence day, the sacrifices of the national heroes are remembered, the country's sovereignty is appreciated, instilling nationalism in the citizens, as well as celebrating the culture and tradition of its people. Independence Day (Filipino: Araw ng Kasarinlan; also Araw ng Kalayaan, lit. "Day of Freedom") is an annual national holiday observed on June 12 in the Philippines, commemorating the Philippine Declaration of Independence from Spain on June 12, 1898. It is the country's birthday. Throughout the nation's history, the day of celebration for war and love has changed.
By virtue of Presidential Proclamation No. 28, issued by then-President Diosdado Macapagal on May 12, 1962, the day became known as "Independence Day" in the Philippines. The proclamation declared June 12 a special public holiday in the Philippines "... in commemoration of our people's declaration of their inherent and inalienable right to freedom and independence."
The Filipino people celebrate Independence Day this year as they prepare to welcome a new set of leaders and recover from the Covid-19 pandemic (Philippine Army, 2022). This year's theme emphasizes recovery and the country's rise to the problems of the previous years, particularly the pandemic.
In celebrating Independence Day, many people, including government officials, employees, and students, take part in nationwide parades. The main attraction, however, is the police and military parade in Manila led by the country's incumbent president, which is followed by a speech and a 21-gun salute. Many Filipinos spend their days at parks and shopping malls. Many Filipino communities in other countries also celebrate the country's Independence Day. The public holiday celebrates Philippine history, freedom and culture. They hang up the flag in most public places and take a day off.
